Donald DeForge, VMD, Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry

Dentistry & Oral Surgery

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, Donald DeForge, VMD, Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry developed a special interest in oral care. In 1996, he was honored as North East Practitioner of the Year by the American Animal Hospital Association. That same year he received the Peter Emily Residents Award in Small Animal Dentistry.
Dr. DeForge lectures on companion animal dentistry locally, regionally, and nationally; emphasizing practical applications for the general practitioner. His articles on companion animal dentistry have appeared in DVM Magazine, Veterinary Practice News, the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry, and the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. He is also co-editor of An Atlas of Veterinary Dental Radiology.

The advanced dentistry services he provides include pediatric dentistry and adult periodontal care; oral surgery; stomatitis surgery in cats utilizing guided bone regeneration, a surgical treatment which he developed that is currently the only treatment known to resolve this painful condition in cats permanently; oral orthopedics for the treatment of difficult to repair jaw fractures and other maxillo-facial injuries; endodontics; oral oncology; and prosthodontics.

In addition, Dr. DeForge is the Primary Consultant in Zoo Dentistry at the Beardsley Zoological Gardens in Bridgeport, CT. He routinely performs oral surgery and root canal therapy, in collaboration with the zoo veterinarian and team of technicians and keepers, to restore a pain-free quality of life to the zoo species in his charge.
